Laser Welding Services at Honest Steel

Honest Steel partners with Tier-One suppliers and OEMs in medium- to high-volume assembly and fabrication of carbon steel, aluminum, steel, and stainless steel tube and sheet metal. Our fabrication methods include painting, assembly, welding, forming, and laser cutting. We also offer prototyping and first-article services using our clients’ designs, working closely with your engineers to develop a proof of concept before production begins.

The Laser Welding Process

A welding laser generates a small, high-precision beam of light absorbed by the surrounding material, raising its energy. The laser agitates the surrounding electrons, causing the material to melt as the atoms rupture their bonds. Laser welding can quickly join metals by melting their seams in milliseconds, forming a strong junction. Laser welding equipment uses several components to amplify and guide the laser, producing a powerful beam.

Welding lasers typically rely on optical fibers to generate the beam, with machines available in both single-fiber and multiple-fiber configurations. The power of the laser increases with the number of fibers. Laser cutting machines also feature focusing lenses and collimators to create a more concentrated beam for precision work.

Laser welding can be combined with arc welding to create hybrid laser arc welding. This process integrates methods like SAW, TIG, and MIG welding, resulting in deeper penetration and improved joint-fit tolerance. Hybrid welding also reduces defects such as internal porosity and cracking.

Types of Laser Welding

There are two primary laser welding methods:

  • Keyhole welding: This method uses a welding laser beam to heat the metal to vaporization, creating a deep keyhole in the metal with temperatures exceeding 10,000° K.

  • Heat conduction welding: This process heats the metal above its melting point without vaporizing it, creating smooth, aesthetically pleasing welds. It's ideal for applications that don't require extreme weld strength and uses a low-power laser under 500W.

Types of Lasers Used in Welding & Cutting

At Honest Steel, we utilize a range of lasers for both welding and cutting, including:

  • Gas lasers: Powered by gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and helium, these lasers can operate continuously or in pulses, depending on the application.
  • Carbon dioxide lasers: Using high-purity carbon dioxide, helium, and nitrogen, these lasers are applied in dual-beam laser welding for enhanced precision.
  • Solid-state lasers: Operating at a wavelength of 1 micrometer, these lasers offer continuous and pulsed options, ideal for spot welding with deep penetration.
  • Diode lasers: Excellent for materials resistant to other welding techniques or for welding in tight spaces. Diode lasers require an inert gas shield when working with reactive materials.

Advantages of Laser Welding

Laser welding offers several benefits over traditional welding methods:

  • Compatibility with challenging or dissimilar materials
  • Ideal for heat-sensitive materials
  • Improved dimensional tolerances
  • Quiet and clean operation
  • Minimal heat-affected zones, reducing material distortion
  • Up to two times faster than plasma welding and eight times faster than TIG welding
